Anna Malazhavaya brings over fifteen years of diverse domestic and international tax expertise, both on and off Toronto’s Bay Street. She is the founder and Chief Lawyer of Advotax Law, a firm specializing in complex tax litigation and sophisticated tax planning. Anna is a frequent presenter and contributor to the tax industry’s publications and events.
Anna previously worked at Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP, where she focused on tax litigation and dispute resolution. In this role, she represented clients at all levels of the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) dispute resolution process, including audits, objections, and all stages of litigation at the Tax Court of Canada and the Federal Court of Appeal. Anna has conducted trials, motions, discoveries, and participated in case management and settlement conferences before the Tax Court. She also advised on key aspects of tax controversy management, such as negotiating settlements, audit plans, and objections for large corporations. Her expertise covers matters involving up to $100,000,000 in tax disputes, with a particular focus on HST issues in real estate transactions, net worth assessments, and cryptocurrency.
Anna co-authored “Shareholders’ Agreements: Tax Basics for Corporate Lawyers,” an internal guide for Cassels Brock lawyers. She has significant experience in international taxation, advising on inbound and outbound investments (including real estate), cross-border acquisitions, offshore planning (including moving intellectual property offshore), cross-border employment matters, and transfer pricing.
