Consumer Inflation – Official vs ShadowStats (1980-Based) Alternate | Chart of the Week

Year to Year Change. Through June 2022

The CPI-U (consumer price index) is the broadest measure of consumer price inflation for goods and services published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

The formal CPI is reported on a not-seasonally-adjusted basis, with annual inflation measured in terms of year-to-year percent change in the price index.

This chart shows SGS-Alternate CPI estimates based on the methodology which was employed prior to 1980.

Curious, do we know how to see the data that ShadowStats used to gather the 1980 based CPI, other than ShadowStats?

I personally think it is much more accurate than the CPI-U that the Fed claims, because they exclude the 2 largest costs that people have: housing and energy.

Hi Erik – sorry for the delay in getting back to you but I am sure we can look into that. Will have our analyst take a look and get back to you.

    Hi Erik,

In speaking with our analyst, we can’t know from where Shadowstats gets its info. You would have to contact Shadowstats themselves.

Unless you just wanted to see the data that was used, if that’s the case, there’s usually a link near the chart to download an Excel file of the data (may require a subscription). Hope this helps a bit.
